The interim government is primarily tasked with holding new parliamentary elections within the next six months.

Sushila Karki proposed holding new general elections on March 4, 2026 in her first cabinet meeting soon after taking office.

Sushila Karki is popular for her impeccable integrity and impartiality. She became the first woman Chief Justice of Nepal in July 2016 but her tenure lasted less than a year as lawmakers moved an impeachment motion against her, which later failed.

During her judicial service, she judiciously took a tough stand against corruption, which made her very popular among the general public and Gen Z protesters.

The situation is complicated on the constitutional front as well, with the Nepal Bar Association terming the dissolution of Parliament and Karki’s appointment as unconstitutional.

The international community including India has expressed hope for the return of peace, stability and democratic process in Nepal.
