In the capital of Uttarakhand Dehradun the law and order definitely seems to be in doldrums. Few months ago a young man was shot dead by a criminal from UP settled in Dehradun, a girl was gang-raped in a bus at Dehradun main Bus station and just few kilometres away at Rishikesh a journalist was brutally attacked by Liquor mafias and earlier in Haridwar and adolescent was raped.
(POLICE POST NEXT TO THE CLOCK TOWER)
Though the criminal activities are going on on daily basis as well not every mishappening appearing in news , what seems to be shocking is that the heavy expensive wires and panel of the historic Clock Tower watches built in 1940 inaugurated by the then Railway minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and foundation laid by the then UP governor Sarojini Naidu have been robbed creating quite a furore in the media, police department and political circles despite the hard fact that just a few feet away there is a permanent police post looking after law and order round the clock and tremendous traffic. Not only this but a few months ago the nozzles of all the taps and fountains of the historic clock tower too have been robbed with not a single fountain functioning. After this theft of the heavy wires and the entire panel the clocks of the tower has stopped functioning. The needles of the clock are stuck at four minutes left for two O Clock midnight unambiguously indicate the the theft have been committed at nearly two AM midnight. Just imagine how could a thief or thieves climb the tower without having access to the key of the lock of main entrance ? The clock tower is the municipal property and according to the municipal commissioner an employee is permanently deputed 24×7 at the Tower premises. Moreover several policemen are on regular duty day and night at the police post just near the Clock Tower. Kindly recall that the Dehradun clock tower was constructed in 1940 after the ultra rich of Dehradun Lala Anand Singh Rayees ( Rich) and his mother Manbhari Devi had donated Rs 25 thousand to the then municipal authorities in memory of late Lala Balbir Singh who was a reputed figure and the then justice. The sons of late Lala Balbir Singh namely Anand, Hari, Sher and Amar Singh were among the donators for this historic clock tower. Since then the municipal authorities have been maintaining this historic building. After the theft was reported in the media and excessive publicity made , the municipal commissioner has lodged an FIR at the concerned police station and the police is busy trying to catch the culprits behind this theft. Built in 1940 and inaugurated by Sarojini Naidu in 1953. Ghanta Ghar, Clock Tower is more than just a time keeper, it’s a city’s pride. It’s a heartbeat as recorded in history.
