While the wild life human conflicts has massively surged in Uttarakhand with several human beings falling prey to the carnivore predators especially the maneater leopards in various parts of Garhwal and Kumaon division the wild bears have also created havoc attacking more than thirty five women during the ongoing month of December.
The maneater casualties have been four during December and two deaths through wild bear attacks while more than thirty women were grievously injured. The Uttarakhand government rids itself of the responsibility by providing Rs. 5 to 6 lakhs as financial compensation and Rs. Two lakhs to the injured women unambiguously indicating that a human life in the Himalayan state killed by the carnivores is merely Rs. 6 lakhs each.
Sounds shocking. Meanwhile, the former chief minister of Uttarakhand and Haridwar MP for the first time Trivendra Rawat has expressed his serious concern over the increasing human wild life confrontation and placed his views in the Forest and environment consultative committee meeting in Delhi chaired by the union minister of environment Bhupendra Yadav.
Mr. Trivendra Singh Rawat after expressing his serious concern over the increasing tragic incidents of wild life and human conflicts in Uttarakhand and subsequent loss of lives of innocents said that the consultative committee meeting described the increasing “human-animal conflict” in Uttarakhand as a serious and burning challenge and raised the issue of increasing migration of wild animals towards populated areas as a matter of concern.
He urged that the root causes should be identified by conducting scientific surveys of sensitive areas, so that permanent and practical solutions can be ensured.
During this healthy interaction extensive discussions were held on integrated policy, local participation and technical interventions to deal with human-animal conflict said Mr. Rawat adding further that
serious concern over the death of elephants due to trains in Haridwar area were expressed and stressed on the need to strengthen railway-forest coordination, warning system, speed control and other structural measures said Rawat.
He also urged to take effective steps for the conservation of Lachhiwala Elephant Corridor and safe movement of wildlife.
