Garhwal Heroes defeat defending champion Indian Air Force by 2-0 in the first ever premier League at Ambedkar Stadium

The three time Delhi Soccer champion Garhwal Heroes football team yesterday defeated the defending champions Indian Air Force by 2-0, bringing cheers to the football lovers of Uttarakhand and fans around.

The first ever Premier league conducted by Football Delhi and Garhwal Heroes at Dr. Ambedkar Stadium in New Delhi, have in all twenty football teams competing, with Garhwal Heroes also a significant participant.

The three time Delhi Soccer Champions Garhwal Heroes Football Club has recruited three foreigners into their fold to become champion in the prestigious premier League in order to qualify participating in the next I League.

Kindly recall that in the senior division league, 20 top teams of Delhi participated in two groups and top five teams qualified for the first ever Premier league, which started at Dr. Ambedkar Stadium, the hub of Delhi football. Garhwal Heroes played its first match against the defending champion Indian Air force and defeated them by 2-0.

Garhwal Heroes also emerged Champion of Delhi State Senior division league in 2018-19.

In all every team will play 9 matches in the league and team earning maximum points will be champion club of Delhi.

The eminent footballer, coach n manager GHFC Magan Patwal says that Garhwal Heroes established in February 1953 by its founder Secretary, late Sh. Keshar Singh Negi on its peak during eighties and emerged Delhi State Senior division league champions in 1986. But due to poor financial position of the club, star players of the club started to join other clubs who no doubt offered better financial support and club even then survived with the great support of Sukhpal Singh Bisht, former BSF player, captain and coach. However in 2002, the club was relegated in lower division.
During 2003, Sh. Durgesh Thapliyal was inducted as Secretary of the Club and he made efforts to make more members.

At the same time, S/Sh. Bhagwan Singh Negi, Anil Kumar Negi, Ravinder Rana and others joined the club who have generated funds for the club. Consequently a top players were inducted in the team and in 2004 the club became champion of A-division and again was promoted to Senior Division. From 2004 onwards, the club again came in the lime light with the efforts of all. Mr. Bhagwan Singh Negi was made President and Mr. Anil Negi as General Secretary. Ravi Rana was appointed as Coach and with his tireless efforts, the club again emerged champion of Delhi State in 2011.

The same year the team participated in the 2nd division Indian league. In 2015 n 2018 the club again became Delhi champion besides runners up in 2013 n 2016.

In the meantime, the club made tie-ups with Bhaichung Bhutia Football Schools run by torch bearer of Indian football in international arena and started to groom players at grassroot level.

In 2018-19, club qualified for Indian league and qualified for the final round but missed the chance to get first place, otherwise the club would have been playing first division Indian league. This year, the club has qualified for Premier league, which was played from 7 December at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Lodhi Complex.

The club can be one of the best in India with the financial support from football loving people especially from Uttrakhand. 8 players were selected to represent Delhi in the recently held Senior National football championship for Santosh trophy that started from 1st of December.
