August 06, 2024

The Communist Party of India expresses its deep concern on the grave situation in Bangladesh following the biggest mass protest resulting the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and subsequently leaving Bangladesh.

In a statement issued here by the national council of CPI is us said that last one month Bangladesh had witnessed students protest against the reservation system in job and other areas and demanding withdrawal of this system. The movement which started in peaceful way transformed it to a violent one. The way Hasina government dealt against this movement it resulted in more than three hundred dead and more than one thousand five hundred people wounded. More students and all sections of the people join this movement day by day.

The statement added : Even after the Supreme Court reduces the Quota to 5% only on July 21, the students protest continues with demands of legal actions against Law-and-order authorities for mass killings. The magnitude of mass protest was seen throughout Bangladesh it was inevitable that autocratic rule of Sheikh Hasina would fall.

The CPI while taking note of the spontaneous mass protest against Hasina government, recognizes the fact that the fundamentalist and reactionary forces had hijacked the popular movement and exposed their ugly face by destroying the statue of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman under whose leadership Bangladesh was liberated thus denying the inclusive legacy of Bangladesh liberation movement.

The CPI condemns such acts and believes that the Left, democratic and patriotic forces in Bangladesh will do their best to prevent such activities of the fundamentalist and reactionary forces.

Now Bangladesh is under the hands of Military and its head has declared that country will run by an interim government. Party hopes that it should be an inclusive interim government and will bring back the normal law and order situation. Guarantee the life and property of all minority communities, continue to carry forward good neighbourly relations with India and not to allow its land for anti-Indian terrorist organisations as in the past demands CPI.

The CPI calls upon the Government of India to take appropriate steps to protect Indian citizens in Bangladesh, so that peace and stability continue in Border areas.
