Five media organisations to assemble at PCI precincts on Monday April 21 against DPDT act

The Indian Women’s Press Corp (IWPC); the Press Club of India (PCI); the Editors’ Guild of India (EGI), Delhi Journalists Union (DJU) and DIGIPUB this MONDAY (April 21) at 4 P.M. have appealed to journalists of national capital to assemble at the Press Club of India lawns, Raisina Road, New Delhi, to express their concerns over the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, set to be notified soon by the Government of India.
This call to join hands have been given by the Press Club of India President Gautam Lahiri.
He said there will be domain experts
at the meeting to explain to the media persons how exactly would the Act come in the way
of the journalists’ professional work adding further that our biggest concern about the Act is the penalty clause of a whopping Rs 250 crores which can go up to Rs 500 crores against an individual /entity, if the DPDP Board the government would appoint as it deems fit.
According to a statement released by Gautam Lahiri – on the global scale (worldwide) , such laws exempt journalists, and the cumulative endeavour of all the above media organisations is to ensure that this Act also exempts the professional work of journalists in India.
Lahiri said the above organisations are highly optimistic of seeking an appointment with the minister concerned for a meeting at the earliest to take forward the joint decisions when ch would be taken at the open meeting on the matter.
Terming this effort as a cumulative struggle for media freedom PCI chief Lahiri said that this is a joint fight for press freedom, and therefore, we would go ahead with the aid and advice of all the stakeholders and if needed, should reach out to press clubs in other parts of the country too to make our voice stronger.
He requested all members of the IWPC, DIGIPUB, EDI, DUJ and PCI to be present at the meeting positively to express their solidarity to the genuine journalists cause.
