Even adolescent girls not safe in outer Delhi district’s Rohini !

The outer district of NCT of Delhi , especially Rohini and adjoining parts of Mangolpuri and Sultanpuri are crime infested with few months ago a girl coming back from work on the new year eve at midnight, a resident of Sultanpuri was dragged during midnight by a group of hoodlums under a tyre of their car with her body stuck in the front tyre finally dying of several severe wounds after grievously being hurt and injured. This deadly murder of a young girl with police patrolling parties not to be seen after being literally dragged several kilometres on vacant roads for hours together had literally shaken not only the people of Delhi but entire country. Unfortunately, despite such crimes on spurt and media highlighting them regularly there is negligible action from the side of the law enforcing agencies to ensure that women are safe and secure. Since there was tremendous media hype In the Sultanpuri case the police left no stone unturned to trace and nab the culprits but does it really happen In other petty cases of thefts n snatchings is, a moot question ? In Rohini for instance incidents of chain, mobile n laptop snatchings by bikers covering their faces with masks and gamchaas and threatening those who resist their attempts bravely has become the order of the day and the people hailing from middle and lower middle classes fearing reprisals by these criminals and not hopeful of getting justice are constrained not to report the crimes to police especially with no guarantee of police protection. Though in various parts of the capital incidents of chain, mobile n purse snatchings do take place and the daily newspaper reports about such crimes are open proofs of these cases happening regularly but in Rohini areas usually people walking in parks, roads and market areas are also not safe at all especially women and adolescents, even youths and aged persons talking on mobile phones becoming victims. On Wednesday 22nd June two such chain snatchers tried to snatch a backpack from a tenth standard girl who was passing through Yuva Shakti School in Sector 3 Rohini before noon. However it is not known whether the bikers with mask had the intention to only snatch her back pack or allegedly kidnap her. It was – say by virtue of her bravery or swift action that the badly terrified adolescent girl resisted and ran in various streets followed by these bikers who were two in numbers badly panicked and terrorised finally reaching her house after an hour or so just by chance with her luck favoring her. The badly worried terrified parents heaved a sigh of relief finding their daughter safe after several hours. In the melee she lost all her question papers, some money and stationery etc. The parents of the girl are badly terrified not knowing what to do – even apprehensive to report the matter to police as it is believed that the CCTV cameras nearby weren’t working etc. She was going to her coaching centre when this incident occurred. Such horrible incidents usually occur daily as patrolling parties are seldom seen on roads, near markets or residential areas in action to instill a sense of confidence in women community or local residents and terror of law in the minds of those committing such petty n heinous crimes. It is high time that the law enforcing agencies should seriously increase patrolling in all sectors, main and street roads including market areas ensuring that office going girls, school going students and women in particular are fully safeguarded and secured. After all the slogan of the government’s flagship programme is Beti Padhao, Beti Bachai. If the women and our girl students and those going for jobs are not safeguarded how will the girls will be educated and protected as the government slogan goes, it’s a moot question?
