Comic actor Rajpal Yadav in Tihar Jail

The renowned Bollywood Comic actor Rajpal Yadav has finally surrendered to the Jail Superintendent of Tihar Prisons, New Delhi after he was directed to do so by the Delhi High Court in a case pertaining to a cheque bounce case of Rs five crores which he had taken from a Delhi based party for his film Ata Pataa Lapataa in 2010. Since the actor wasn’t in a position to maintain the amount in his bank equivalent to the amount of the cheque due to his financial difficulties , the cheque bounced few times and despite the courts strict directions he couldn’t pay the same finally surrendering at Tihar Jail saying that he has no money nor friends to help him.

The film “Ata Pata Laapataa” was released in 2012 which was Rajpal Yadav’s directorial debut. While nobody in the Bollywood came to Rajpal Yadav’s rescue it is Sonu Sood who came forward to help the comic actor in distress saying that Rajpal Yadav is a gifted actor who has given years of unforgettable work to our industry. Sometimes life turns unfair, not because of talent, but because timing can be brutal. He will be part of my film, and I believe this is the moment for all of us..producers, directors, colleagues to stand together.

A small signing amount, adjustable against future work, is not charity, it’s dignity. When one of our own is going through a tough phase, the industry must remind him he’s not alone.

The It may be recalled that the check bounce case relates to 2010, when Rajpal Yadav directed the film Aata Pata Lapata.
This was the directorial debut of Rajpal Yadav who borrowed Rs. 5 crores from a company called Murgli Project Private Limited. When the Comic actor failed to repay the loan on time the lender filed the lawsuit against Rajpal, alleging that the checks issued by the actor had bounced. The case then reached court, where it went through the Magistrate’s Court, the Sessions Court, and finally the High Court.

The High Court granted a conditional stay on Rajpal’s arrest in 2024, requiring him to repay the money. In December of last year, the actor promised to pay the money in installments, but when he failed to do so, the Delhi High Court ordered him to surrender at Tihar Jail on February 2. Rajpal surrendered on February 4. He has been in jail ever since.
