Bangladesh government writes to Indian government demanding extradition of former PM Sheikh Hasina
The Bangladesh has demanded immediate extradition of the former prime minister Sheikh Hasina from India to Bangladesh who has been provided political asylum in the national capital of India, New Delhi. The former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina had landed at Hindon Airport , Ghaziabad on 7 th August 2024 in the Bangladesh Army chopper after she was forcibly compelled to quit under tremendous public pressure. The prime minister’s entire official bungalow was looted in open public glare few days after and several cases under various severe sections of law lodged against her.
The Indian NSA escorted her to the safest destination in New Delhi then. Since then she is living in India in an undisclosed address. According the the latest news the Bangladesh government has written to Indian government urging to extradite the former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina to her country.
According to the foreign affairs advisor to Bangladesh government Taahid Hussain – our government wants that to honour the judicial process the Bangladesh former prime minister should be send back to their country that gave the charges levelled against her in various courts.
On Monday the advisor to the Home affairs Jahangir Alam had already said that the Foreign Affairs ministry of Bangladesh has already been communicated in writing to write to India asking for the extradition of former PM Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh.
It was only then that Bangladesh is asking for the extradition of Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh.
It may be recalled that Bangladesh is asking for the repatriation of Shiekh Hasina on the basis of the 2013 extradition pact signed between Bangladesh and India.
In 2013 under the extradition treaty a bilateral pact was signed between both the countries to extradite the criminals who escaped to other countries, back to their respective nations.
The Bangladesh government has demanded Shiekh Hasina’s extradition under this 2013 extradition treaty.
Though there is also a provision in this treaty that if the extradition is related to a political dignitaries, vindictive nature of charges with political overtones then the extradition request can also be revoked.
As far as the extradition between Bangladesh and India is concerned it was basically signed to exchange the criminals, insurgents terrorists, etc who clandestinely come to each other countries to escape punishment from lawlessness.
The crimes included in this pact are those involved in bomb explosions, spying, criminal activities, money laundering, terrorism etc.
It hasn’t been signed to extradite the political leaders. Though former prime minister Sheikh Hasina is a political leader but the new Bangladesh political dispensation has registered cases against her for loot, cumulative murders, forgery etc. though with political vindictiveness.
