
Today the chief whip of the Congress parliamentary party and three term member of parliament Manickam Tagore visited the Press club of India precincts on the invitation of the Management Committee led by its president Gautam Lahiri. In addition to the president of OCI Gautam Lahiri all the committee members and the secretary general Neeraj Thakur , Vice President Sangeeta Baruah Pishroty , joint secretary Afjal Imam, management committee members Sunil Negi, Ravindra Kumar, Ashraf Ali Bastavi, senior member Vivek Mukherjee, former MC member Amitabh Chakraborty ,Vijay Shankar Chaturvedi, and Mohit Dubey of News Nation etc were present on this ocassion and participated in this interactive meet. Various important issues related to media freedom and safeguards of journalists including tabling of the new bill of Journalists regarding the introduction and formulation of the New National Media Council and national media policy were discussed at length with full assurance from the Congress leader to table it in Parliament through the INDIA alliance partners to exert pressure on the ruling political dispensation to bring more transparency in according the media freedom to journalists and ensuring their safeguards to enable the fourth estate work freely and thus strengthen democracy. The senior journalist Mr. Vivek briefed the chief whip about the PCI’s new initiative in this regard. A few days ago the former chief minister of Haryana and MP, a Congress heavy weight visited PCI and assured full cooperation to the PCI’s healthy initiative in this regard. This proposed National Media Council will be headed by a retired Supreme Court Judge with seven MPs from national political parties including MPs from regional parties according to their recognition by the ECI and several distinguished personalities from various fields across the spectrum bereft of any government control.
