A ( Rtd) IPS who looked after former PM Indira Gandhi’s security details and promoted by Rajiv Gandhi is the Mizoram’s chief minister

An IPS of 1977 batch, hailing from a poor family from a nondescript village in Mizoram, protecting the then prime minister Indira Gandhi as an important part of her security detail in 1982 having been disqualified as MP and MLA twice under the anti defection law, 74 years old Mr. Lalduhoma is the first time chief minister of Christian dominated Mizoram pledging not to have any alliance with NDA or INDIA having issue based relationships with the central government. Having secured a clear cut majority of 27 MLAs with the former ruling party Mizo National Front getting ten seats only, BJP two and Congress the worst sufferer with only one seat 74 year old former IPS rose to the top echelon of power in merely four years after his regional party came into existence four years ago namely ZORAM PEOPLE’S MOVEMENT.. When Lalduhoma joined late prime minister Indira Gandhi after she called him from Goa where he was posted as a strong IPS officer hard on Drug Kingpins, he helped Indira Gandhi bring MNF leader Laldenga on a negotiating table starting a chapter of resolving the then most complex insurgent problem of Mizoram. Holding an outstanding academic background Mizo Ram’s would be chief minister Lalduhoma chose studying hard to escape poverty by first graduating from Gauhati university with distinction and there after appearing for civil services exams qualifying as IPS five years later being first posted in Goa and then called by the then prime minister Indira Gandhi after she got the news about his daring performance as a strict IPS at Goa being extremely stringent against the drug kingpins there. After his tenure with Indira Gandhi he was the Deputy Commissioner in Delhi Police and patronised by the then prime minister Rajiv Gandhi later in retiring from service in the test 1984 finally joining the Congress party and becoming elected MP from Mizoram, unopposed. He resigned after four years and invited the anti defection law, returning home to establish an organisation called Mizoram Congress for Peace which he later converted to Mizo National Union in 1968. However, he met with political disaster after MNU under his leadership fought elections in the state not winning a single seat. But his spirit and determination continued incessantly with Lalduhoma ‘s MNU amalgamation itself with another regional entity to form a new Democratic Party only to split with Lalduhoma joining the Mizo National Front led by a firebrand leader Laldenga. However, in 1997 he resigned from MNF having differences and confronting defeat at the hands of former CM Zoramthanga in the race for party presidentship. He later in established MNF ( Nationalist) finally converting it into a Zoram People’s Movement to win eight assembly seats and today securing a full fledged majority with 27 seats as the next CM of Mizoram without any support from other political parties, regional or national compelling both the established national parties and MNF to bite the the dust.
