India votes in favour of Palestine in UN assembly while 18 abstain and seven nations including US, UK, Canada etc voted against
While on the one hand the Israel Hamas war is on full swing with thousands of people, especially Palestinians dying and hundreds of thousands injured with over 15 to 20 lakh Palestinians displaced after the Hamas killed 1700 Israelis on 7 th October taking the lead and giving reason to Israel to retaliate thereafter massively the Palestine has tabled a strong protest representation in United nation’s asembly against Israel which was put to vote with India surprisingly voting in favour of the resolution. The Western and European countries like seven nations Canada, US, UK etc voted against the Palestine resolution, about 18 countries abstained from the voting with 88 countries voting in favour of resolution, though despite best efforts of Palestine it couldn’t get the two thirds majority as was expected. According to sources the stand of Indian government to support the Palestine resolution and vote favourably in UN General assembly against Israel which is a very strong friend of India and vice versa versa was primarily based of India’s long standing policy of support for Palestine right from the days of late prime minister Indira Gandhi during the days of PLO leader Yasser Arafat and Indian first prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru to standing with them unstintingly. Though India is deadly against Hamas, terming them as terrorists, out rightly rejecting them always including Hezbollah and standing with Israel cohesively since 2014, but in terms of viewing badly suffering Palestinians minus Hamas India was compelled to vote in favour of Palestinian on extreme humanitarian grounds. India has a clear and categorical stand on Israel and Palestine. While it is for the release of the hostages captured by the Hamas it also wants a ceasefire urging Israel , Hamas and Hezbollah to stop their attacks immediately. The representative of the deputy standing Committee of UN Yojana, Patel has said that while we are for ceasefire we want the immediate release of the hostages in captivity of Hamas unconditionally. She said that India always believed in two nation theory and resolution of the ongoing crisis between Israel and Palestinian through peaceful dialogues not confrontation in order to establish a sovereign Palestine under the recognised jurisdiction of Israel. It may be recalled that the prime minister Narendra Modi had strongly condemned the Hamas attacks on Israel civilian areas on October 7, and had assured Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu of India’s fullest support and solidarity. On the initiative of PM Modi about 38 tonnes of relief materials were sent to Palestine as, a token of India’s solidarity with Palestinian people as well. This, resolution has come in UN Assembly after the resolution for complete ceasefire was tabled in UN between Israel and Hamas and incessant attacks of Israel on Gaza Strip residents killing and injuring thousands of them. Till now as per the Gaza official figures about 11,100 people have died in Israeli attacks that include eight thousand children and women.
