Congress asks : Why is all party meeting in PM’s absense ?

The Union home minister Amit Shah has called an all party meeting on June 24 on critical Manipur situation however the Congress party has come down heavily on the BJP lead NDA government terming this exercise as a delayed one saying that what relevance would it hold when the prime minister Narendra Modi is out of the country visiting US.

Saying that at the outset the PM’s absence from such a serious meeting shows his cowardice and unwillingness to confront his failures as when multiple delegations sought meetings with him , he had no time for them tweeted Congress leader K. C. Venugopal.

The Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in his tweet in Hindi wrote : Manipur is burning since the last fifty days , but prime minister has maintained his silence. The all party meeting has been convened when prime minister himself is not in the country. It is clear that for prime minister this meeting is not important tweeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

It may be recalled that after the riots that occurred in Manipur resulting in more than 100 deaths and extensive loss to properties with annoyed people of both Maietie and Kuki communities whose houses were burnt and hundreds of families became homeless and several armouries and police stations looted, the Union home minister Amit Shah had extensively visited the riot affected areas of the strife torn North eastern state and personally met affected families and people in relief camps assuring them of all possible help and support.

The initial large scale clashes took place between May 3 to May 5 including massive arson and lootings in Kuki dominated hills and Meity dominated valley resulted in massive loss to lives and properties with thousands of people displaced and shifted to relief camps.

However, on June 13 another tragic flare up took place in Manipur in which 9 people died. This tragedy occurred at Aigejung village in Manipur’s Kangpoki district.

In a lengthy tweet Congress leader Venugopal wrote : Well after 50 days of death and destruction in Manipur, HM
@AmitShah’s call for an all party meeting is too little too late. The government only woke up after Smt. Sonia Gandhi ji’s address to the people of Manipur.

At the outset, the PM’s absence from such a serious meeting shows his cowardice and unwillingness to confront his failures. Even when multiple delegations sought meetings with him, he had no time for them.

The HM himself has presided over this situation and made no progress, in fact things have worsened since his visit. Can we expect genuine peace under his stewardship?

Moreover, the continuation of the partisan state government and non-implementation of President’s Rule is a travesty.

Any effort for peace must take place in Manipur, where the warring communities are brought on the discussion table and a political solution is arrived at. This effort will lack seriousness if it is done sitting in Delhi.

The entire nation expects a serious intervention from the Union Government, which has been missing in action so far.
