German Ambassador gives assurance to clean heavily polluted Yamuna in the near future after meeting Delhi CM

The Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday met the German Ambassador along with the deputy CM Delhi Manish Sisodia at Delhi Secretariat and discussed with him the possibilities of exploring the cleaning of river Yamuna which is badly polluted and also transforming the Delhi roads. In a twitter Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal while passing a ridiculous comment on PM Modi, Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi : Modiji is busy harassing us through the medicines of ED, Income Tax and ACB but we will continue to work annexing pictures of his meeting with the German Ambassador. According to the German Ambassador office’s post after the meeting : The German Ambassador to India H. E. Dr. Philip Ackermann called upon Hon’ble chief minister of Delhi Shri Arvind Kejriwal at the Delhi Secretariat today. Both Germany and Delhi will explore avenues of collaboration upon the mission of cleaning Yamuna and transforming thr Delhi roads.

The German ambassador also highly appreciated Delhi government’s schools and hospitals, recognising the CM’s efforts towards transforming them said the German embassy information.

It may be recalled that in the past too there have been several efforts and claims of purifying the highly polluted Yamuna river in which thousands of crores of rupees have been spent during and before the tenure of Shiela Dikshit government.

Several claims of purifying of Yamuna were made by the present AAP government as well but it’s still polluted immensely.

According to a report though only around 22 kilometre of 1,400 kilometre of river flows between Wazirabad and Okhla, the national capital acounts for 76% of pollution load on this river but despite numerous projects working to clean it with lots of money spend, they proved futile.

The first Yamuna Action Plan with loan agreement was signed in 1992 for the river’s improvement in water quality, conservation in the river and hygiene environment in the cities in river basins. After the first and second plans, YAP III is underway though the Yamuna water is not even fit for bathing purpose, except at Palla where the Yamuna enters Delhi reveals a Hindu report. Currently the levels of Felcom Colifom ( micromes from human and animals excreta) is beyond the desirable levels at all points except at Palla. At some times it is even 760 times higher says the Hindu report.

There have been several assurances by various political dispensations including by the Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal during assembly election assuring of a clean Yamuna in five years when anyone could dip and bath in this river without any fear of diseases, but all in vain.

This, assurance was given by Arvind Kejriwal on January,19, 2020 in the run up to the Delhi Assembly elections.

In the past too lot of money of the World Bank had been spent on cleaning Yamuna worth Rs. 1500 crores but things are still to square one.

It may be recalled that several Delhi drains are flowing in Yamuna rivers with human n animal excreta as well as toxic chemicals of various factories operating in and around Delhi.

Let’s see if the assurance of the German government really makes a difference on this front in the near future.
