77 persons killed after a cable bridge falls down and 400 persons felling in the deep river in Morbi district of Gujarat
A severe tragedy has occured in Gujarat today when a cable bridge collapsed killing about seventy seven persons so far. This tragic accident occured on Sunday after the cable bridge which was restarted five days ago after necessary repairs and renovation broke down enabling about four hundred persons falling down with seventy seven persons declared dead so far.
According to the latest reports the cable bridge collapsed in Morbi district of Gujarat over Machchu river killing seventy seven persons and injuring several others. Among the dead are the men, women and children. Prime minister Narendra Modi spoke to the Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel and directed him to expedite the relief and rescue operations. The NDRF teams are busy rescuing people and retrieving the dead bodies. Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel in his tweet wrote : I am leaving for Morbi by cancelling all my upcoming events today. Direct monitoring of the situation and necessary coordination with the situation will be achieved by reaching the site in person.
The chief minister Bhupendra Patel announced the financial compensation of Rs. Four lakhs each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50000 to the injured.
The NDRF, , SDRF local people, police and the administration are busy in the rescue operation.
The numbers of the dead may enhance further as the rescue operation is in ful swing. The dreaded incident has occured at 6.30 PM after around four hundred persons were walking on it. Since the 140 years old cable bridge could not bear the overweight it collapsed.
This is a hundred years old bridge. This bridge was repaired just few days ago at the cost of two crore rupees.
There were tickets for bridge users. If seems that the employees had issued tickets beyond capacity resulting in the bridge breaking down leading to over 400 persons falling down in the deep river. According to the latest report only three persons have so far come out of the river alive.
The chief minister of Gujarat Bhupendra Patel has reached the spot and is supervising the operation. About hundred persons are injured and are being treated in various hospitals.
A probe committee has been appointed comprising of municipal commissioner, police commissions n several senior officers. The prime minister is in Gujarat. He has also announced compensation of Rs 2 lakhs to each of the deceased n Rs 50000 to injured from PM relief fund.
This bridge was earlier maintained n run by the Nahar Palika but was lateron transferred to a trust. The bridge was closed for six months but was all of a sudden opened five days ago after necessary repairing n renovation.
Meanwhile, the home minister Amit Shah has expressed his deepest condolences tweeting : I am extremely anguished on hearing about the tragedy in Morbi. I have spoken to the Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi and senior officers. The local administration is doing their relief Services dedicatedly. NDRF has also reached the accident spot. Issued directions to the administration to immediately give adequate treatment to the injured.
The Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has tweeted : Deeply saddened by the tragedy that has struck us with the collapse of the suspension bridge in Morbi, Gujarat. I appeal to the @INCGujarat workers to extend every possible assistance in rescue work n helping the wounded. My condolences n prayers are with the bereaved families tweeted Congress president.
kindly recall : In order to ear profit about 500 persons were issued tickets against the bridge’s capacity of 100. A disaster like this was inevitable.
