52 year old villager attacked by a wild bear at Dharkot, Garhwal

A wild bear attacked a person in Mori Block, Uttarkashi district, leaving him seriously injured.

The incident occurred in Gangad village, which falls under the Govind Vayu Wildlife Sanctuary (GWV) zone.

The man had gone to graze his sheep and goats when a bear suddenly appeared from the forest and attacked him.

According to reports, Surat Singh (52 years), a resident of Gangad village, and Putali Ram, had gone to the Kanasara Tok area of ​​Dharkot on Wednesday to graze their cattle. A wild bear suddenly emerged from the bushes and attacked him.

Hearing the screams of the victim, the villagers reached the spot and somehow chased the bear away by making noise.

After the incident, the villagers took the injured Surat Singh to the Community Health Centre (CHC) Mori, where doctors, after providing primary treatment, referred him to a higher centre in Dehradun due to his critical condition.

As soon as the information about this incident was received, Deputy Director of Govind Vay Jeev Vihar, Nidhi Semwal reached the spot.

He stated, “The injured were immediately taken to the hospital in a police vehicle and financial assistance of ₹30,000 was provided as immediate relief.”
He further stated that forest patrols have been increased at the scene to prevent such incidents.

Wild animal attacks are increasing in Mori and surrounding areas during the winter months.

Villagers have demanded that the Forest Department increase surveillance during the night and morning hours and send in trappers or vigilante teams if necessary.
