Cabinet passes former president’s recommendation for one nation, one election proposal
On the recommendation of the former president Ram Nath Kovind committee for holding one nation, one election in the largest democratic country in the world, the union cabinet chaired by prime minister Narendra Modi has unanimously passed it opening a new chapter of holding the general , state assembly and Panchayat and local body elections in the entire country uniformly from 2029 , strongly opposed and criticised by the the Congress, AAP and Samajwadi parties including the leftists and all the regional parties of the country, especially those in India National Inclusive Developmental Alliance. This one centre one state elections policy of the BJP led NDA was very much in their election manifesto during the previous elections. This decision of the central government led by the BJP on the support of 72 MPs of Telegu Desam Party and United Janata Dal led Andhra Pradesh CM and TDP supremo Chandrababu Naidu and the Bihar CM Nitish Kumar respectively is being opposed by entire non BJP opposition. In Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha the Bhartiya Janata Party is short of majority by 72 and 52 MPs respectively. If this law is to be ratified by both houses of parliament it requires the two thirds majority in both the house which it definitely lacks and the constitution will have to be amended at least six times to finally make it a law which doesn’t exactly seems to be so convenient especially when the ruling BJP lacks 72 MPs in Lok Sabha and 52 in Rajya Sabha though running in the support of TDP and United Janata Dal.
Meanwhile the Congress president and the chairman of I.N.D.I. alliance Mallikarjun Kharge has strongly criticized this decision of the BJP led NDA government at the centre terming it an issue to divert the attention of countrymen from the core issues this writing in his social media handle X in Hindi : One Nation, One Election is only a BJP issue to divert attention. This is against the constitution, This is against democracy, This is against federalism. The country will never accept this said Kharge on X. On the one nation, one election decision of the Cabinet committee that unanimously passed the the recommendation of the committee headed by the former president of India Ram Nath Kovind the Samajwadi Party supremo and the former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav came down heavily on the BJP and the saffron party led NDA government criticizing it strongly in a stringent rejoinder in Hindi : At the same time, by-elections in Maharashtra, Jharkhand and UP should also have been announced. – If ‘One Nation, One Nation’ is in principle, then please clarify whether the elections of all the village, town, municipal bodies from the chief to the Prime Minister will be held simultaneously or will it be done as per convenience to make arrangements for the victory or defeat of the government on the pretext of festivals and weather? – When BJP topples the elected government of any state, will the elections of the entire country be held again? – If President’s rule is imposed in a state, will the elected government have to wait till the next general elections to come back or will there be fresh elections in the entire country ? – Has any time limit been set for the constitutional amendments that would be required to implement this or is this also just a slogan thrown around to be put on hold for the future, like women’s reservation? – Is this a plan to change the results by privatizing the elections? Such apprehensions are arising because tomorrow the government will say that it does not have the necessary human and other resources to conduct elections on such a large scale, that is why we are giving the work of conducting elections on contract (to our people). – The public suggests that BJP should first conduct such elections simultaneously within its party at district, city, state and national level and then talk about the whole country. – In the end, the public is also asking why the election of your own national president has not been held yet, whereas it is heard that there is only ‘one person, one opinion’. Is there a fight of ‘two persons, two opinions’ in the weakened BJP, Kharge posed questions to the BJP led government ?
